The Little Mermaid
"...When the mermaid sisters rose, arm-in-arm, through the water to the surface, their youngest sister would stand quite alone, looking after them, ready to cry, only that mermaids have no tears, and therefore they suffer more. “Oh, were I but fifteen years old,” said she: “I know that I shall love the world up there, and all the people who live in it” ..."

Though by no means my favourite fairytale (there are so many wonderful stories, i cannot choose), this is one I recently re-read in its full, classic version... so my imagination is still alive with mermaids, shells and underwater gardens....
